Global AI Governance — Who actually has AI law?

Global AI Governance · 249 jurisdictions · June 2026

Policy is common. Binding law is rare, recent, and heavily concentrated in the EU. Flip the map to see how far the EU AI Act reaches past its own borders — and note the hatching, which marks every country not yet checked against a primary source.

hatched = source not yet verified

The narrowing

From having something on paper to a comprehensive law actually in force. Each step is a subset of the one above it, drawn from this dataset.

How to read this honestly. “No framework identified” means not found in available sources as of 25 June 2026 — not confirmed absence. 48 rows are anchored to an official/primary source (verified 3 Jul 2026), 57 rest on secondary trackers and are genuinely upgradeable, and 144 are absence citations — no law exists to cite, so the tracker showing no entry is the correct source. Hatching marks everything not primary-verified. This is a fast-moving field and several 2026–2028 dates are provisional (notably the EU’s Digital Omnibus deferrals). The map renders 177 mappable countries; smaller states and dependent territories in the dataset have no visible polygon but are in the underlying tracker.
